TV - it's the offseason, lets discuss

All the drafts are over now we have the next couple of months to fill.

Thought i'd post a couple of TV shows, that i highly recommend, perhaps you can watch them in the off season, simply discuss them or suggest your own. Anything to take your mind (and mine) off little footy news for a couple of months.

Damages - just finished season 1, loved it, such a smart show with twist after twist that not once felt contrived. The use of flashbacks during the whole season was so effective and relevant. Ellen Parsons rocks.

Breaking Bad - season 1 was good, season 2 was brilliant. The acting is phenomenal and I can honestly say it is the least predictable show I have seen in a long long time.

Parks and Recreation - season 1 was pretty good, season 2 is the funniest thing I have seen on TV since 30 Rock season 1. Every single character is hilarious.

Fringe - half-way through season 1 it went from entertaining and intriguing to so much more. It's basically the X-Files meets Alias with some humor.

I would say off the top of my head these are the 4 shows i have watched of late that I have enjoyed the most.

    Some others to mention

Deadwood - so sad that it was cancelled, best western on TV since i don't know when
True Blood - season 2 went off the rails a bit, but still good
Battlestar Galactica - first two seasons were incredible, 3rd was pretty good and the 4th was a little naff, but if you like sci-fi, it should be watched
Buffy - will forever be my favourite show, halfway through season 3 is when it all clicks. We watch all 7 seasons (or at least the last 5) every couple of years and still enjoy it immensely each time. I miss it.

    and
Six Feet Under, Firefly, Seinfeld, Dexter (2nd season was tops), 30 Rock and i have been known to whack on a random episode of the Golden Girls (when i was kid i was all about Rose and Sophia, when i grew up it changed to Blanche and Dorothy)

Deadwood actually wasn't "canceled" but more the creator decided he wanted to move onto another project. That other project became the failed "John from Cincinnati" surfer drama... Also, there is next to no chance of the often talked about Deadwood movies.

    Shows to look at:

    The Wire
    Homicide: Life on the street
    Sopranos
    Deadwood
    OZ
    Nurse Jackie
    United states of Tara
    Lie to me
    Life
    Dexter
    Alan Partridge
    Saxondale
    Spaced
Blankety Blanks (I love the repeats on Saturdays on the comedy channel)

Well I was there about 3 weeks ago and they were that price and they were showing them about, so I am thinking it was more that they have marked them down and they were advertising the mark down.

This is in Melbourne take in mind, so Sydney may be charging the regular price.

"The Wire" - there are 5 seasons worth to watch. Season 2 is on ABC2 atm. It's the best show I've seen in ages.

Re: TV - it's the offseason, lets discuss

Well my choices won't even raise an eyebrow - oh, I don't know, it might like in WTF?

Sat 7/Prime - Wallander. Haven't yet caught up with this version. The original Swedish show was a cracker. This might be ok as it's a BBC production - as long as it's not Yankee! Oh, Kenneth Branagh plays the lead role if that means anything. (pity about the ad breaks!)

Sun SBS - A History of Scotland (replaces Who Do You Think You Are)

Mon ABC - Lilies, Y&B or DVD

Tues SBS - The Circuit, best Oz drama since Wild Side.

Wed SBS - The Eagle, re-run of Danish crime/anti-terrorist series. Well worth a second look. How come these countries can turn out gripping shows without all the Yankee bang-bang, shoot 'em up, car chases?

Thurs Y&B, DVD, or often good drama movie on SBS about 10pm.

Fri ABC - Wire in the Blood (showing re-runs now so prob Y&B or DVD)

Yes the movies have been excellent Gimme, lots of great French and Spanish cinema. Just wish they could start them a little earlier.

Oh speaking of why couldn't they start it earlier, One HD have botched the NFL coverage I reckon. Its either live during the day when most people are at work, or from 11pm when most people are in bed or at least thinking about it.

    Makes CT a tired boy.

S'pose a free-to-air, 24 hour sports channel is nothing to be sniffed at, even if it is heavily weighted with boxing replays, wrestling, trail bikes and golf. Yawn...

Re: TV - it's the offseason, lets discuss

Half way through watching season 2, will watch the rest this weekend. Knew nothing of it, but friend recommended it. Is fantastic, and everything you say from acting to least predictable show is spot on.

Managed to watch all the US Office's season 1-5 recently. Not as cringable funny as the original but love the way characters have developed and guaranteed a few big laughs each episode.

On a selfish note, The Pacific is on next year, probably show in Oz from March 15th ish on Channel 7. Had a bit to do with it, and will be great TV. 10 part miniseries

Alot of Aussies will be critical as shows no Aussie troop involvement, but is about US Marines fighting the Japanese in the Pacific theatre. There is one episode about when the marines R&R'd in Melbourne after the battle in Guadacanal.

If you liked Band of Brothers, this is the companion piece, told slightly differently as instead of being about one specific Company, it focus's on three indvidual's stories during WW2. Look out for it. Will be good.

Band of Brothers is being re-run on Sunday nights. Very graphic, soldiers sans arms, sans legs.

Gets a Gimme tick for occasionally mentioning that there were other countries fighting in WW2 - apart from Yankee Doodle Dandy.

Re: TV - it's the offseason, lets discuss

No doubt they have brutal moments, and in fact The Pacific will be more brutal owing to the nature of the fighting against the Japanese.

During the series there will be a landing at Pelileu which most people will liken to the start of Saving Private Ryan. All these produced by same people (Spielberg & Hanks), and same military advisors. Thing is in speaking to the Americans is they all knew so much about the War, but from an American point of view. Ask them if they have even heard of Kokoda and they draw a blank.

They simple want to make the best show/movie they can for the audience, and they only picture that audience as being American. Not a critisism, just the way it is for them. So if you go into watching it not expecting anything other than an American story, you're not so disappointed.

Fringe season 2 is pretty good too. Very enjoyable I'm enjoying it.

Dollhouse S2 got interesting just when it got cancelled. At least Fox are letting them finish it off "properly" - loving Summer Glau's part in the show of late... oooh, yeah. Summer & Eliza in the same room. *drool*

Chuck is returning in January - WOOHOO!!!!

heroes has fallen in a heap and will be cancelled soon I think.

Been watching an interesting UK show called Paradox, which is about this science experiment thing which is beamed pictures of events in the future and a team of cops are trying to sort it out. Good fun stuff.

2nd season of the survivors remake is due soon.

Stargate Universe (SGU) was Okay I guess, but the mid-season finale (ep 10) was really good, and there's some real promise there I think. We'll see.

I'm sure there are some others but I can't think of any just now.
