Richmond’s international rookie, Irishman John Heslin, says he is itching to experience consistent match play, after six months of solid training.

The 21-year-old from Westmeath relocated to Melbourne in July last year, and while the Tigers were in the middle of their season, Heslin confined to the training track.

“Six months is a long time not to play games, and I’m getting to the stage where I’m just itching to play games,” he said.

“Back home I used to play games once a week, sometimes twice, for the whole year, and only have a week or two off. So six months of just training has been tough that way. “

Heslin has worked closely with Richmond’s fitness staff and coaches, learning the game, developing his skills, and dealing with the rigours of pre season training.

“It’s my first time having a pre-season ever, because I never had one when I was in Ireland,” he said.

Seems like a down to earth fellow and certainly knows where he is at.

    To be sure.

I like him. I'd love it if he succeeded, but I have no idea if he will. By mid-year we all should have a better idea. Remember that he is still quite young (19yo?), so has more time.

Like the sound of this guy though he does seem to be itching to play some football. Hopefully he doesn't get bored.

You should always back me in, Vines:D He was born on 27 June 1992, making him 19yo.

He is Irish so the birth certificate was filled in by a drunk.

    He may well be 38.

Hey Gimme, my grandmothers family name was O'Hanlon, but when they migrated from Ireland to England, they became Hanlon.

I recently asked my nan about this and she said, with a straight face, 'I am not sure whether my dad did it on purpose or because he was drunk and spelt it wrong'. Not sure if my nan was pulling my leg or not, but a good story for the kids.

I believe you're referring to poteen - or poitín if you're Irish - and it is a whiskey not a wine. The original moonshine. I first tasted it in the foothills of the Dandenongs. They swore me to secrecy but I couldn't have found my way back there if I'd wanted to.

I was just making an Irish joke, but I will store that for future reference, good info to have!

Nice to see that they have brick shithouses in Ireland too. The boy's whopperous!

(Cue innuendo - which isn't a new brand of games console...)

    Cheers!
    Ms Tantie.

Innuendo, that's in reference to a prostrate examination, isn't it?

No, only a standing up one. ;)

    Cheers!

Just be aware that they have a blood test to check now Gimme, any other testing is purely recreational.
