RICHMOND midfielder Shane Edwards has been known as 'Tich' for good reason. When he came over from North Adelaide he was so skinny he could fit down a drainpipe on the Punt Rd grandstand.

But now, after another summer of hard yakka in the gym and on the tooth, he's ready for a new nickname. Edwards has put on 7.5kg since last season, bringing his weight to 81.5kg.

Maybe he should be renamed 'Arnie' or 'Muscles', or just plain 'Eddo'.

"It's been easier to put on weight because I'm a bit older and my body's more mature," he said.

Edwards was drafted at No. 26 in the 2006 NAB AFL Draft. He was just 66kg when the Tigers took him on.

Every pre-season since then, he's worked on putting on weight, but not too fast. The Tigers' fitness staff warned him that an explosion in kilograms would slow him down and put pressure on his groins.

7.5kg!!! I knew he bulked up but wow. I mean, im usually happy if a midfielder gains 3-4kg. Going to be interesting to see how he goes this year.

He will burn half of that off within the first month of playing. During the season proper they cut down on the training and weight work so that the bodies don't fatigue.

Most players drop a few kg over the season. Still too light IMO and he should have put on more weight in other preseasons.

I thought the bit about being careful not to put too much weight on during previous pre-seasons to avoid stressing a young body was interesting.

I struggle to see how he is still to light after putting on 7.5kgs he is only 182cm tall so weight wise he would have to be around 80-84kg for an even match between speed and strength and more and it would slow him down?

Webberley, White, Newman and Houli are all in the height range and all weight about the same and Eddo (based on the info on the RFC site) and I wouldn't consider any of them needing extra weight?

Be interesting to see the way he goes about it now he will be hard to push of the ball and also to bring players down

Very interesting Roffie. Don't know if I agree with that at all.

3kg of muscle is SFA. barely noticieable. A little through the core and legs, some on the arms and upper body.

The gaining of weight hasn't seemed to have hindered many young players, so why Edwards?

Not sure about the obsession with his weight to be honest. AFL caters to all shapes and sizes, his issue is his tendency to butcher the footy.

His issue is the perception amongst supporters that he butchers the footy. I agree that he misses some kickable goals but he more than makes up for it with his creativity.

    It's not a perception.

I'm not saying he is Dan Jackson but there is no doubt he has a tendency to lack poise and make costly errors.

He might dispose of it well seven times out of ten but one out of ten times he makes a terrible error, that's what he should be working on, not pumping his guns.

I have him at 181cm but, regardless, I don't think he'd want to be much more than 82kg.

Even Richo noticeably slowed down when they put all that weight on him in the Great Wallace-stay-at-home FF mode. When he dropped the weight off him he was like a spring lamb (or a cheetah).

If a player such as Richo who had more petrol in the tank than Eddo is ever likely to have was slowed down it stands to reason thay it would similarly affect Eddo. I trust that the coaching staff know what they are doing.

And, yes, tbr - that's a good point about his use of the ball specially in the early part of each season.

No way, Jose. If "terrible" is the standard, then it would be closer to 1 in 30.
  11. RROFO
He used to do the "dear in the headlights" impersonation and get caught with the ball. This had me really worried especially since we also had JON at the time who had exactly the same problem. I am please to see he has worked on this and seems to have improved his awareness.

Thing about Edwards is when he stuffs a kick he really stuffs it. It's embarrassing. Where another player might simply miss a target by a few meters, Edwards has a tendency to almost miss the ball and it ends up rolling along the ground.

Bloody nuff nuff, but I don't think those bad kicks happen that often or any more often than other players stuff up. When they do happen they are very noticeable.

    Jackson's the same.

1 a match sounds about right. Some times none, some times a couple.

At least the opposition can't mark a ball grubbed along the ground.

    Yeah that's a better assessment.

I'm inclined to think this happens more so in the early part of the season. Once we get to around about round #5 or #6, he seems to do ok.

The thing I am wondering about is whether it's just Eddo being a little "rusty" or whether it's the team not quite gelling.

It will be interesting to watch this year and see how some of these players go who come in for criticism because the team should be playing together more cohesively with players backing up team mates, running past them when they have the ball and running to position.

This should cut down on players pausing too long before disposing of the ball as the options should be much more evident. I believe this has been one of our big downfalls.
  16. Broadsword95
Ooo I'm not a fan of Duncan the Pedant.
  17. Broadsword95
I'd say there's evidence for that last season; can you remember it being the same in previous seasons? (I assume you can, as that's essentially what you said. I'm just pressing you on it.)
  18. thebigricho
I agree it is no more than some other players but I think the difference in impact on the side in terms of the harm it causes and the deflation or morale is much more significant than other errors.

It's a bit like a difficult dropped catch in cricket as opposed to a dropped sitter.

One of my main criticisms of Edwards early on is he always tried to be to fancy with the ball.....RROFO mentioned the "deer in headlights" syndrome, but I do not think it is really that...but more he tried to dodge opponents instead of releasing it when he has a chance...when he did evade his opponents it looks very good...but just needs to judge these things better
